“We Are Coming Back With Peter Obi” – Labour Party Declares Ahead of 2027 Election

The Labour Party (LP) has reaffirmed its commitment to fielding Peter Obi as its presidential candidate in the 2027 general elections, setting the stage for a potential rematch against President Bola Tinubu. The party’s leadership remains confident that Obi, who finished third in the 2023 election, will be a stronger contender in the next race.

Speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today, LP’s National Publicity Secretary, Abayomi Arabambi, emphasized the party’s resolve to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) with Obi at the forefront. “Tinubu is not just going to have it very easy in 2027; we are coming back with that Peter Obi to them so that they will know we are very serious,” he declared.

Obi, a former governor of Anambra State and the LP’s 2023 flagbearer, gained widespread support during the last election, particularly among youths and urban voters. Despite his third-place finish behind Tinubu and former Vice President Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), the LP believes he remains the best candidate to unseat the incumbent.

Arabambi dismissed suggestions that the Labour Party was weakening following internal disagreements and the recent departure of prominent member Kenneth Okonkwo. He insisted that the party remains stable and is only facing opposition from external forces. “There is no leadership crisis in the Labour Party. Labour Party is not going into extinction. It is just a figment of the imaginations of most of our detractors,” he stated.

He further reassured supporters that the party’s leadership is taking steps to strengthen its internal structures ahead of the next election cycle. The focus, according to him, is on maintaining party discipline and ensuring that internal conflicts do not derail their ambitions.

“In 2027, we are not going to have such political rascality in our party. The National Chairman is on a reconciliatory mission, which is why you see a lot of people being jittery,” Arabambi asserted. This statement appears to be a response to ongoing tensions within the party, as some members have expressed dissatisfaction with its leadership.

Labour Party’s reaffirmation of Obi’s candidacy comes amidst speculation that he may consider aligning with another political movement. However, Arabambi’s statement suggests that the party remains committed to retaining Obi as its primary candidate.

Political analysts believe the 2027 election could be a defining moment for the LP, as it seeks to build on the momentum it gained in 2023. Obi’s growing popularity, particularly among young and independent voters, could be a major factor in the upcoming contest.

The LP’s announcement has also reignited debates about Nigeria’s political landscape, with questions surrounding whether the opposition can effectively unite to challenge the APC’s dominance. Some analysts argue that for Obi to succeed, he will need to expand his support base beyond his strongholds.

While it remains to be seen how the political climate will evolve in the coming years, the LP’s renewed push for Obi signals that it is not backing down from its ambition to challenge the status quo.
