Social critic Martins Otse, widely known as VeryDarkMan, has publicly apologized to the Nigeria Police Force after facing backlash for wearing a police uniform in one of his recent videos. The incident, which drew significant attention, prompted the police to condemn his actions and initiate an investigation into the unauthorized use of their uniform.
In the controversial video, VeryDarkMan humorously introduced himself as a “Chief Superintendent of Police (CSP) of the Online Division,” donning an attire that closely resembled that of official police wear. His portrayal, intended as a joke, was met with criticism from the police, leading to calls for accountability.
Responding to the uproar, VeryDarkMan released a follow-up video on Thursday, in which he expressed remorse for his actions. He acknowledged the misunderstanding and stated, “Back from the police station where I was interrogated based on the post I made wearing a costume that the police claim is similar to theirs.”
“I didn’t intend to impersonate the police in any way and I tender my unreserved apologies to the Nigeria Police Force and the office of the Inspector General of Police,” he added, making it clear that his intention was not to mislead the public.
In his apology, he also took the opportunity to advise others against wearing police attire without proper authorization. “I would like to use this medium to tell the general public to always seek permission from the police or other law enforcement agencies before using anything that might look like their uniform,” he warned.
VeryDarkMan elaborated on the potential consequences of such actions, stating, “You might want to use it for good, but there are others that might want to use it for bad. So it’s good to get full approval before using anything that might seem impersonating.”
He also expressed gratitude to his lawyer for their support during the situation, mentioning, “Shout out to my lawyer @adeyanjudeji who is always ready to stand.” This acknowledgment indicates the seriousness with which he has approached the matter.
