Nigerian social media critic Martins Otse, widely known as Verydarkman, has officially responded to a police invitation following controversy over his use of an official police uniform. The Nigeria Police Force recently criticized Otse for donning their attire without authorization, raising concerns about the implications of his actions.

In a video posted on his Instagram account, Otse, who claims to be Nigeria’s “top online police officer,” defended his choice to wear the uniform. The police’s public reprimand highlighted the potential legal ramifications of misrepresenting law enforcement. “The Force does not agree with the unauthorized representation of its officers in the video,” police spokesperson Muyiwa Adejobi stated in a statement on October 26.

The controversy erupted after Otse was seen in a police uniform, where he identified himself as CSP Verydarkman. His online persona aims to address societal issues and combat oppression on social media, particularly targeting unscrupulous online sellers. GistLover, a popular gossip platform, reported on the incident, amplifying discussions surrounding his actions.

In a recent video, Verydarkman was filmed wearing a carton-colored matching suit as he made his way to a police station in the Federal Capital Territory. The video showcased him waiting for his lawyer outside the station, further emphasizing his intention to cooperate with the police investigation.

“I was invited by the police command two days ago on the allegation that I used police uniforms to make a video. I am on my way now to clear my name,” Otse explained, demonstrating his willingness to engage with law enforcement to address the claims against him.

Adejobi confirmed that the police are actively investigating the source of the police gear shown in Otse’s videos. The investigation aims to determine whether any misconduct occurred and to address concerns about the misuse of police uniforms by civilians.
