Tochi Wigwe Delivers Emotional Speech at First Matriculation of Wigwe University

Tochi Wigwe, the daughter of the late Herbert Wigwe, founder of Wigwe University, delivered a heartfelt speech at the institution’s first matriculation ceremony on November 14, 2024. The ceremony, which marked the official welcome for new students, came nearly a month after the university began its academic year. It was a significant moment for both the institution and the Wigwe family, as the university’s journey began only 240 days after the untimely passing of Herbert Wigwe, the former CEO of Access Bank.

In a moving display of strength and emotion, Tochi took the stage to address the gathered students, faculty, and guests. “Thank you all for being here today,” she began, warmly introducing herself and expressing her gratitude for their support. Representing her family, she acknowledged the important milestone the event represented, while also reflecting on the legacy of her late father.

During her speech, Tochi shared her admiration for the students’ creativity and energy. “I must confess, I’m constantly watching your TikToks, and honestly, they make me smile every day,” she said. “You guys are so creative, so full of energy, it’s honestly contagious.” Her words resonated with the audience, and she emphasized the importance of youthful exuberance in the university’s culture. After the speech, Tochi took time to interact with the students, posing for photos with them and strengthening her bond with the vibrant campus community.

As the ceremony continued, Tochi offered the students words of wisdom, drawn from her personal experiences. She shared three life lessons she had learned, encouraging the students to embrace their journey with confidence. “Number one, you only miss opportunities you do not take. Number two, you’re so much stronger and braver than you ever think. And the final one, God will never give you a battle you are not equipped to handle,” she advised.

The emotional tone of Tochi’s speech became more apparent as she neared the end, with the young woman fighting back tears. Her voice trembled as she urged the students to make the most of their time at Wigwe University. “Show up and show out in everything you do,” she said, delivering a sincere and powerful message that left a lasting impact on the audience. Many were visibly moved by her words, with some students expressing how inspired they felt after hearing her speak.
