Grammy-nominated Afrobeat artist Seun Kuti has sparked a wave of controversy after stating that he would refuse to stay in heaven if he sees any Nigerian politician there. The singer expressed his surprise and disbelief over the fact that many Nigerian politicians, despite their alleged corruption, still aspire to reach heaven.
During a recent Instagram live video, Kuti shared his thoughts on the matter, calling it perplexing that politicians who have been widely criticized for corruption would seek to enter heaven. He remarked, “Despite how corrupt Nigerian politicians are, they still want to make heaven. Yemi Osibanjo is also a pastor. With everything that is happening in this country, these politicians still want to go to heaven.”
Kuti’s comments were particularly directed at the hypocrisy he perceives in Nigerian political leaders who profess religious piety while allegedly engaging in corrupt practices. He referenced Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, a pastor, as an example of the contradictions he finds troubling in Nigerian politics.
The musician’s statement further escalated when he made a bold declaration about what he would do if the afterlife as portrayed by Christianity and Islam were to be real. “If I died and the Christian and Muslim fantasy heaven happens to be true and see that people are actually going to heaven if I see one single Nigerian politician for heaven, I will go outside. Because that would mean that there’s corruption in heaven,” Kuti said.
