Nationwide Blackout as National Grid Collapses

The national grid suffered another system collapse on Wednesday, leaving many Nigerians without electricity. The incident, which occurred shortly after 11 a.m., disrupted power generation nationwide, worsening the country’s already fragile electricity situation.

According to reports, the grid initially recorded an hourly power generation of 4,064 megawatts at 11 a.m., but this sharply declined to 1,203 MW by noon. By 1 p.m., power generation had dropped to zero, completely cutting off supply from most power plants. Sources within power generation companies confirmed a general grid disturbance, which led to a widespread outage.

Efforts to get an official response from the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) were unsuccessful. The company’s spokesperson, Ndidi Mbah, did not respond to inquiries, stating that she was attending an official function. However, sources within the sector confirmed that the collapse was triggered by a trip-off, which caused a cascading failure across the network.

In response to the blackout, the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) acknowledged the situation on its official X (formerly Twitter) handle. “Dear Valued Customer, we regret to inform you that a system disturbance occurred on the national grid at 11:34 a.m. today, causing a power outage across our franchise areas,” the statement read. The company assured customers that efforts were underway to restore electricity.

This marks the first nationwide grid collapse in 2025, following a line-tripping incident in January. The country’s electricity grid has been plagued by frequent failures, with 12 collapses recorded in 2024 alone. Over the past decade, the grid has failed more than 100 times, underscoring persistent structural and operational challenges in the power sector.

The latest collapse has raised concerns among Nigerians, who continue to struggle with unreliable electricity supply. Many businesses and households remain dependent on alternative power sources such as generators and solar energy. Industry experts have repeatedly called for urgent investment in grid infrastructure to prevent future failures.
