Governor Otti Rules Out Future Political Ambitions, Vows to Address Civil Service Injustices in Abia State

ALEX OTTI

Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti, has unequivocally stated that he will not seek any political office after completing his tenure as governor, dispelling rumors that he plans to run for a senatorial seat in the future. The governor made the declaration on Saturday during a reception hosted in his honor by the Anambra Development Unions Association, Aba chapter, addressing a large gathering of supporters and community leaders.

In a direct and firm response to the speculations surrounding his political future, Otti stated, “When I complete my eight years in office, I will retire from politics. I am not going to Abuja.” The statement comes amid ongoing chatter about the possibility of him entering the National Assembly after his tenure as governor. However, Otti emphasized that he had no interest in pursuing such a path.

The governor further explained that he believed it was time for the younger generation to take the reins of leadership. “Let us give room to the rising generation. The future belongs to them,” he said. Otti’s remarks underscored his belief in the importance of fostering new voices in governance and allowing fresh perspectives to guide the state’s political future.

Governor Otti’s comments also reflected his recognition of the evolving societal dynamics, particularly with respect to the increasing involvement of youth in political matters. He highlighted that young people are becoming more engaged in governance, and it is vital to create opportunities for them to assume leadership roles.

During his address, Otti also touched on the issue of civil service reform, specifically addressing the controversial 2011 termination of 154 workers, mostly teachers, from the Abia State workforce. The governor described the action as “unjust and unconstitutional” and pledged to revisit the matter, signaling his administration’s commitment to rectifying past wrongs.

The dismissed workers, Otti noted, were allegedly targeted due to their state of origin, and this, he asserted, was a violation of their rights. “We will address this matter,” Otti vowed, indicating that the review would be carried out promptly. His administration is looking to correct the injustice by ensuring fair treatment for all citizens, regardless of their background.

As part of his commitment to resolving the issue, the governor revealed that he had instructed the State Head of Service to initiate an urgent review of the situation. Otti expressed his intent to address the matter in a way that would be both fair and just, ensuring that those affected were properly considered for re-engagement where possible.

“We will explore appropriate compensation for those who may not be eligible for re-engagement,” he said. The governor also highlighted the pressing need to fill the significant teacher shortage in the state, suggesting that those workers under the age of 65 could be considered for contract re-engagement, particularly in the education sector.

Governor Otti’s administration has consistently focused on correcting injustices and ensuring equal treatment for all citizens. By addressing the civil service issue and rejecting any future political ambitions, he aims to leave a legacy of fairness, inclusiveness, and a commitment to the well-being of the people of Abia State.
