The 9th edition of the Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards (AMVCA) is generating excitement in the Nigerian film industry as the highly anticipated event draws near. The nominee list is a testament to the growth and evolution of the African film and movie industry. In particular, the non-voting category is filled with entries that have received multiple nominations across various categories.

 

The most notable entry for the 2023 AMVCA is Anikulapo, produced by popular filmmaker Kunle Afolayan. Anikulapo leads the pack with a total of 16 nominations in 15 categories. The movie has been nominated for Best Writer in Movie or TV Series, Best Lighting Designer in Movie or TV Series, Best Indigenous Language Movie or TV Series (Yoruba), Best Soundtrack in Movie or TV Series, Best Picture Editor in Movie or TV Series, Best Sound Editor in Movie or TV Series, Best Cinematographer, Best Director, Best Makeup Artist Movie or TV Series, Best Movie West Africa, Best Costume Designer Movie/TV Series, and Best Overall Movie.

Another notable entry is Battle on Buka Street, directed by Funke Akindele and Tobi Makinde. The movie has grossed over ₦668,423,056 since its release on 16 December 2022, according to IMDb. It has been nominated for Best Writer in Movie or TV Series, Best Art Director (Movie or TV Series), Best Soundtrack in Movie or TV Series, Best Picture Editor in Movie or TV Series, Best Sound Editor in Movie or TV Series, Best Makeup Artist Movie or TV Series, and Best Overall Movie in the non-voting category.

 

Shanty Town Season 1, written by Xavier Ighorodje and directed by Dimeji Ajibola, has also garnered attention since its release on 20 January 2023. The movie’s unique aspect is its mixture of local languages, including Yoruba, Igbo, and Ibibio. Shanty Town has been nominated for Best Art Director (Movie or TV Series), Best Lighting Designer in Movie or TV Series, Best Soundtrack in Movie or TV Series, Best Sound Editor in Movie or TV Series, Best Cinematographer, Best Director, Best Makeup Artist Movie or TV Series, and Best Costume Designer Movie/TV Series.

King of Thieves (Agesinkole), a thriller film produced by Femi Adebayo, has grossed over ₦320,805,150 since its release in April 2022, according to Wikipedia. The movie has been nominated for Best Writer in Movie or TV Series, Best Art Director, Best Soundtrack in Movie or TV Series, Best Director, Best Makeup Artist Movie or TV Series, and Best Overall Movie.
