The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Sokoto State University (SSU) branch, has declared a total, comprehensive, and indefinite strike, effective from Wednesday. The decision follows the alleged failure of the university administration, governing council, and the state government to address several lingering issues raised by the union.
In a resolution reached at a congress meeting held at the Centre for Caliphate Studies, members expressed dissatisfaction with the level of commitment shown by the authorities in addressing their concerns. The union stated that the strike would completely shut down all academic activities at the institution.
“The union also activated its strike monitoring committee to ensure strict compliance with the directive,” the communique issued at the end of the congress read. ASUU-SSU emphasized that no lectures, examinations, student supervision, marking, or grading of scripts would take place for the duration of the strike.
The resolution was signed by the Chairperson of ASUU-SSU, Dr. Saidu Abubakar, and the Secretary, Hassan Aliyu. They stressed that the strike was necessary due to the continued neglect of issues affecting the welfare of academic staff and the overall academic environment.
ASUU-SSU had previously engaged in negotiations with the university’s administration and state government, but members lamented that little progress had been made. The union accused the authorities of failing to implement agreed-upon resolutions, leaving them with no choice but to resort to industrial action.
Students of the university have expressed concerns over the strike, fearing it will disrupt their academic calendar and further delay graduation timelines. Some called on the state government to intervene and ensure a swift resolution to the crisis.
Meanwhile, ASUU-SSU has reiterated its readiness to resume work only when the university administration and the government demonstrate genuine commitment to addressing its demands. “Until our grievances are met, this strike will remain in force,” the union declared.
