Nigerian crossdresser Idris Olanrewaju Okuneye, popularly known as Bobrisky, has reportedly been placed in a female cell following his recent arrest at the Seme border by the Nigerian Immigration Service. This unusual arrangement is said to be due to concerns for his safety amid the ongoing controversies surrounding his identity and lifestyle.
Bobrisky was subsequently moved to the Force Criminal Investigation Department Annex (FCID) in Alagbon, Lagos State. Reports indicate that the decision to keep him in the female section of the prison stems from worries about potential threats from male inmates. A source stated, “We have a lot of cells in Alagbon; and when you are having a case like that, you have to look for the right place to guarantee the safety and security of the person being detained.”
The source further explained, “Everybody is conscious of the fact that Bobrisky could be gay and nobody wants to be part of a scandal. If you put him among males, anything can happen.” To mitigate risks, authorities provided him with a cell near the female section, ensuring he would not be among female inmates.
Amidst the turmoil, Bobrisky took to social media to address his admirers, urging them to “be classy next time” when they see him. This statement highlights his desire to maintain a certain image and composure, even in challenging circumstances.
As discussions surrounding Bobrisky’s arrest unfold, his unique situation raises broader questions about the treatment of LGBTQ+ individuals within the Nigerian legal system. The crossdresser’s safety concerns reflect ongoing societal tensions regarding gender identity and expression.
In recent years, Bobrisky has become a prominent figure in the Nigerian entertainment industry, often sparking debates over gender and societal norms.
