Afrobeat star Davido has reversed his earlier criticism of the Osun State Commissioner of Police, admitting that there were “genuine efforts” made by the commissioner and security agencies to manage the recent unrest in the state. His initial condemnation of the commissioner had sparked public debate, but the singer later issued a statement acknowledging the efforts to maintain order.
In a fresh statement shared on X, the popular musician revealed that his earlier remarks were made in the heat of the moment. He had criticized the commissioner for his perceived failure to uphold the law amid the violence that claimed several lives in Osun State. However, after a more thorough review of the situation, Davido admitted that he had failed to recognize the tireless work that had been put in by the police.
Davido explained that his outburst was fueled by anger and frustration over the “needless killings” that occurred in the state. “In memories of the innocent souls lost, human emotions overwhelmed me and many of my friends around,” the singer stated in his message. “We did not know the Commissioner of Police had been having sleepless nights alongside other commanders.”
He went on to apologize for the oversight, admitting that he had not fully appreciated the work being done by the security forces. “At this point, the contributions of the police commissioner were not fully appreciated by me. This is a grave oversight, and I want to declare that his support for rule of law and protection of peace in Osun State is hereby acknowledged and appreciated,” Davido added.
The singer’s statement tells the complex and challenging nature of managing public safety in the face of rising tensions. “I want to commend the Commissioner of Police for his dedication,” Davido said, noting that it was important to give credit where it was due.
Davido also urged the security agencies to ramp up their efforts in ensuring peace in the state, particularly with the upcoming local government elections scheduled for February 22, 2025. He emphasized that a peaceful electoral process would be a significant achievement, not just for politicians but for security personnel as well.
“In memory of the dead and the injured, I urge the security agencies, including the Commissioner of Police, to redouble their efforts to sustain peace. We must allow rule of law to prevail,” Davido said in his renewed call for calm.
