Debate Erupts Over Peter Obi’s Comments on Church Vigils, National Productivity in Nigeria

Joshua Bamiloye, the son of prominent Nigerian evangelists Mike and Gloria Bamiloye, has sparked significant discussion online following his criticism of remarks made by politician Peter Obi regarding church vigils. This debate, ignited by Obi’s comments, delves into the intersection of religious practices and the broader socio-economic issues facing Nigeria.

During a recent appearance on the Honest Bunch Podcast, Obi suggested that Nigeria would be better served by prioritizing productivity-driven night shifts instead of traditional church vigils. He implied that these religious gatherings contribute to the nation’s poverty, advocating for a reduction in such nighttime events in favor of a shift toward night work that could enhance overall productivity.

In response to Obi’s statements, Bamiloye took to social media platform X to express his disagreement. He firmly rejected the notion that church vigils were to blame for Nigeria’s economic challenges. “The mentality of blaming church attendance for Nigeria’s problems is a very misguided one and, at best, an insult,” he asserted, underscoring the need for a more nuanced understanding of the nation’s issues.

Bamiloye’s reaction resonated with many who viewed Obi’s comments as an unjust critique of established religious practices. He argued that focusing solely on church gatherings overlooks the more significant systemic factors that hinder Nigeria’s productivity and economic growth.

In his rebuttal, Bamiloye pointed out the absurdity of singling out vigils, which typically occur on Friday nights before the weekend. He questioned why churchgoers were being targeted while other social gatherings, such as concerts and comedy shows, remained unchallenged. “If we want to be productive, why not also ban recreational events, comedy shows, concerts—in fact, ban every social gathering?” he posed, highlighting a perceived inconsistency in Obi’s argument.
