The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has made several arrests in connection with suspected vote-buying during the ongoing Edo Governorship election. The arrests, which took place in the Egor Local Government Area, have sparked outrage among some residents who claim the individuals were unfairly targeted .
According to eyewitnesses, EFCC officials arrived at the scene around 10:00 a.m. and took three suspects, two males and one female, into custody. However, locals resisted the arrests, arguing that the individuals were being victimized without clear justification.
The EFCC’s swift action follows allegations of electoral malpractice and is part of the commission’s efforts to ensure a peaceful and fair election. EFCC Chairman, Ola Olukoyede, emphasized the commission’s commitment to safeguarding electoral integrity, stating, “Our operatives have been deployed to monitor the conduct of the elections. We are committed to ensuring electoral integrity by allowing voters to cast their ballots freely, without any form of financial inducement. Vote-buying is a financial crime, and the EFCC will not tolerate it anywhere”.
The Edo Governorship election has seen significant voter turnout and is being closely monitored by local and international observers. The EFCC’s presence aims to deter potential vote-buyers and ensure a free and fair election.
In addition to the EFCC’s efforts, the Nigerian Police have also made arrests, recovering weapons from suspected political thugs affiliated with the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
As tensions continue to simmer among the affected communities, authorities have urged the public to remain calm as investigations into the alleged vote-buying continue. The EFCC’s actions demonstrate its resolve to combat electoral malpractices and promote transparency in Nigeria’s democratic process.
