The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has called on Nigerian youths to unite and direct their intellectual and physical strengths towards activities that promote a better future free from corruption. This charge was made by the Executive Chairman of the EFCC, Ola Olukoyede, during a town hall event held at the commission’s Uyo zonal office on Thursday. The event was part of the preparations for the 2024 International Anti-Corruption Day, which will focus on the theme “Uniting the Youths against Corruption: Shaping Tomorrow’s Integrity.”
Olukoyede, who was represented by the Zonal Director of Uyo, Johnson Oshodi, emphasized the importance of integrity for the future of Nigeria. “Youths are the future of the country, and if they choose the path of integrity, they will build a brighter future for themselves and the nation,” he said. The EFCC leader encouraged young Nigerians to reject corruption in all its forms and adopt values that would foster national growth and development.
Addressing the youth in Uyo, Olukoyede stressed that they must play an active role in exposing corrupt practices within their communities. He urged them to be vigilant and proactive in identifying and challenging actions that contradict the principles of accountability and fairness. “There is no way corruption can be tackled effectively if these tendencies go unexposed or unchallenged,” he stated.
The EFCC’s call to action comes as part of a broader effort to engage young Nigerians in the fight against corruption, which has long been a significant challenge for the country. The commission has been working to raise awareness about the dangers of corruption and its impact on the nation’s future. “If youths are not actively involved in rooting out corruption, the future they hope for will remain elusive,” Oshodi remarked.
The town hall event in Uyo saw the participation of a diverse group of young individuals, including students, activists, and community leaders. These attendees were encouraged to reflect on their roles in shaping a society free from corruption and to commit to actions that uphold the values of honesty, transparency, and accountability.
In his speech, Oshodi also spoke about the importance of education in fostering a culture of integrity. He urged young people to educate themselves on the laws surrounding corruption and financial crimes, adding that knowledge would empower them to make informed decisions and take a stand against unethical practices in their communities.
