Nigerian singer and rapper, Falz, recently revealed that he once led a double life as both a practicing lawyer and a rapper. Speaking candidly about his experiences, Falz shared how he balanced the demands of the legal profession with his passion for music during an appearance on the Madam Joyce podcast.
The multi-talented entertainer explained that his life as a lawyer by day and rapper by night presented significant challenges. “There was a time I was in court, and living a double life at the time as well. Lawyer by day, rapper by night,” Falz stated. He went on to reflect on the complexities of managing these two demanding careers simultaneously, noting the pressure it placed on him.
Falz also shed light on the restrictions that existed within the legal profession at the time. He mentioned an unspoken rule within legal practice that prohibited lawyers from engaging in other professions or side activities. “There is an unspoken rule of professional conduct within the legal practice where you are not supposed to do other things,” he explained.
The rapper recalled an incident in court when his dual identity was exposed. “So when I announced my appearance ‘With profound respect my lord, the name is Folarin the Falana, appearing for the plaintiff,’ and the judge lowered his glasses and said ‘Counsel, are you not the one doing something else on the side?’” Falz shared with a laugh, illustrating the moment of tension when his dual career paths collided.
