FG Inaugurates Committee to Tackle Boat Mishaps, Ensure Safety on Waterways

The Federal Government has inaugurated a special committee to address the recurring boat mishaps that have led to significant loss of lives and property across Nigeria. The Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola, emphasized that ensuring safety on the country’s waterways is critical to national development and economic growth.

Speaking at the inauguration ceremony in Abuja, Oyetola described the waterways as vital to commerce, transportation, and livelihoods. He stressed that improving their safety and efficiency is a top priority in developing Nigeria’s blue economy. **“The task before us is daunting, but with unwavering commitment, we can eliminate boat mishaps and ensure that our waterways remain safe, navigable, and prosperous for generations to come,”** he said.

The committee’s establishment aligns with the 2024 International World Maritime Day theme, **“Navigating the Future: Safety First.”** The minister highlighted that Nigeria must take proactive steps to prevent tragedies on its inland waterways and ensure that commercial boat operations adhere to global best practices.

The committee comprises key stakeholders, including state government representatives, members of the Association of Boat Operators in Nigeria, marine safety experts, and academics. It will be chaired by the Managing Director of the National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA), Mr. Bola Oyebamiji, while Mr. Adams Offie, Deputy Director of Inland Waterways at the Ministry, will serve as Secretary.

Among its core responsibilities, the committee is tasked with conducting an in-depth review of commercial boat operations in Nigeria. It will also investigate the root causes of boat mishaps and propose sustainable solutions to improve safety standards. The committee is expected to collaborate with relevant agencies to develop regulatory frameworks that will enhance operational efficiency.

Also speaking at the ceremony, NIWA Managing Director, Bola Oyebamiji, assured the minister of the committee’s commitment to delivering on its mandate. He emphasized that safety on Nigeria’s inland waterways is non-negotiable and must be prioritized.

“This is another solution-driven initiative aimed at eliminating boat mishaps on our waterways. I assure you that the confidence reposed in this committee will not be misplaced. At NIWA, this is an opportunity for us to intensify our efforts in reducing marine accidents to the barest minimum,” Oyebamiji stated.

He further reiterated NIWA’s resolve to ensure the highest safety standards on the country’s waterways. “NIWA has been refocused to uphold its mandate without compromise. This committee will work diligently to address the causes of boat mishaps and find lasting solutions,” he added.

The minister acknowledged the efforts of existing regulatory bodies but maintained that more must be done to prevent avoidable accidents. He noted that the government would work closely with local communities and boat operators to enforce safety guidelines and improve emergency response measures.

Oyetola urged committee members to approach their duties with diligence and professionalism, reminding them that their recommendations would shape future policies on inland water transport. “We expect practical, evidence-based solutions that will not only address immediate safety concerns but also create a sustainable framework for safer waterways,” he said.

Boat mishaps have become a growing concern in Nigeria, particularly in coastal and riverine communities, where water transport is a primary means of movement. Reports indicate that poor safety regulations, overcrowding, lack of life jackets, and inadequate vessel maintenance contribute to frequent accidents.

Industry experts have welcomed the initiative, calling it a step in the right direction. Some, however, have cautioned that enforcement remains key to success. “Committees are great, but implementation is what really matters. We need to see real changes in the way boats operate in Nigeria,” said maritime analyst, John Akpan.
