Nigerian actor Olumide Oworu, who is running for the Surulere seat in the Lagos state house of assembly on the platform of the Labour Party, was attacked by political thugs on Tuesday, March 14, 2023.
The attack took place while Oworu and his team were campaigning at Iponri, Surulere.
In a tweet, Oworu described the incident, saying that a member of his team was injured in the attack, but that the situation did not escalate beyond what had already taken place.
The actor-turned-politician also stated that the case has been reported to the Iponri police station.
Despite the attack, Oworu remains committed to his political aspirations and plans to continue his campaign in the area.
His next stops will be the wards in constituency 1, which includes Akinhanmi/Cole, Adeniran/Ogunsanya, Iponri Housing Estate/Eric Moore, Igbaja/Stadium, Shitta/Ogunlana Drive, and Yaba/Ojuelegba.
Oworu’s decision to run for political office is not a new development. The actor, who is best known for his role in the popular Nigerian TV series, “Johnson’s Family Vacation,” announced his intention to run for office in 2022.
His decision to join the Labour Party was seen by many as a bold move, given the dominance of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in Nigerian politics.
