The House of Representatives has introduced a legislative proposal to establish the Bola Ahmed Tinubu Federal University of Nigerian Languages, an institution dedicated to preserving and promoting Nigeria’s rich linguistic heritage. Sponsored by Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu and eight co-sponsors, the bill successfully passed its first reading last week, marking a crucial step toward safeguarding the country’s diverse languages.
According to the proposal, the university will focus on “the advancement of learning” in Nigerian languages, creating accessible pathways to higher education for all Nigerians, regardless of their backgrounds or political beliefs. Deputy Speaker Kalu stated, “The university’s goal is to produce socially mature individuals capable of using Nigerian languages for national development.”
The planned institution aims to develop academic programs that provide students with planning, adaptive, and productive skills in Nigerian languages. Its academic offerings will encompass diplomas, first degrees, postgraduate research, and higher degrees, all designed to equip students with essential skills for both personal and national growth.
Beyond academics, the university is envisioned to serve as a “catalyst” for Nigeria’s social and economic development. The institution will support postgraduate research, encourage innovation, and promote the sustainable use of Nigeria’s natural and human resources. The bill also highlights the university’s future role in fostering collaborations with other national institutions dedicated to language and cultural research.
In addition, the university will be responsible for training high-caliber professionals in Nigerian languages and providing consultancy services to enhance language expertise throughout the country. Outreach initiatives, including in-service training and continuing education programs, will also be integral to the university’s mission.
The President of Nigeria will play a supervisory role as the “Visitor” to the university, conducting visitations at least once every five years to assess its operations. Furthermore, the President will have the authority to remove council members for misconduct or incompetence, ensuring accountability within the institution.
As the bill progresses toward a second reading and public hearing, stakeholders are preparing to discuss its potential impact on Nigerian society and the preservation of cultural identity. Kalu emphasized that establishing the university will promote national unity by fostering a greater appreciation of Nigerian languages, asserting it will help future generations communicate effectively across the nation’s diverse cultural landscape. .
