Former U.S. President Barack Obama has extended his sympathies to the communities affected by Hurricane Helene, which devastated the southeastern United States on September 26. The powerful Category 4 hurricane brought winds of up to 140 mph, leaving millions without power and many areas inaccessible due to destruction.
“Our thoughts are with the people and communities whose lives have been changed by this natural disaster and the first responders who are putting their lives on the line to reach those in need,” Obama said in a statement. He also highlighted the ongoing impact of climate change, noting its role in intensifying extreme weather events worldwide. “As we’ve seen over the past few years, climate change continues to exacerbate extreme weather events across the globe, and their devastating effects impact the lives of many, long after the storm has passed”.
Obama emphasized the long road to recovery and urged collective efforts in rebuilding the affected regions. “We know the path to recovery will be long and rebuilding will require help from everyone, no matter where you are,” he said, stressing the need for unity in the face of such challenges.
Meanwhile, the Biden-Harris Administration has taken proactive measures to support state and local preparation and response efforts. President Biden approved emergency declarations for Alabama, Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, and South Carolina, authorizing FEMA to provide assistance for emergency measures.
Amazon has also mobilized resources to support impacted communities, utilizing its logistics infrastructure, inventory, teams, and technology to deliver critical supplies. The company is working closely with local partners and humanitarian organizations, such as the American Red Cross, to provide aid .
As relief efforts continue, individuals can contribute to the recovery process by donating to organizations like AmeriCares, Project HOPE, and The Salvation Army, which are actively responding to the aftermath of Hurricane Helene
