Popular Nigerian singer Jaywon has spoken about the challenges of thriving in the country’s music industry, describing it as a space that is “not for the weak.” The Afrobeats star highlighted the intense scrutiny and criticism that artists face, warning that those who cannot handle the pressure are unlikely to last long.
In a recent post on his X handle, Jaywon shared his perspective on how social media has amplified industry pressures. According to him, public figures must develop mental resilience to survive in the ever-demanding entertainment space. “Some of my colleagues call me to chat about the current state of the industry and how I handle all the ranting and disrespect online,” he wrote. “My response is always the same: today’s industry is not for the weak.”
Jaywon emphasized that no artist, regardless of their success, is exempt from public scrutiny. He pointed out that even Afrobeats heavyweights like Davido, Wizkid, and Burna Boy frequently face criticism and trolling on social media. “Just look at the level of disrespect thrown at artists like Davido, Wizkid, Burna Boy, and many others on social media. If you’re not prepared, you won’t last,” he stated.
The singer advised his fellow entertainers to remain active on social platforms despite the negativity. He explained that while going offline might seem like an escape, it is not a viable option for those who rely on digital platforms to promote their craft. “They will always come for you, and the only real escape is to go offline, but we can’t do that. This is our life, our craft, and no matter what, we will keep pushing forward!” he asserted.
