Lagos State Government Announces 15-Month Traffic Diversion at Mile 2

The Lagos State Government has officially announced significant traffic diversions set to take effect at Loop 1 on the Apapa bound lane and Loop 4 on the Badagry bound lane at Mile 2. This initiative, which will last for 15 months, is part of the ongoing construction of the Transport Interchange Terminal, aimed at creating a seamless integration of various transportation modes including rail, bus, water, and non-motorised transit options.

The construction work is scheduled to commence on Monday, November 11, 2024, and is projected to continue until February 16, 2026. This extensive project is expected to enhance transportation efficiency in the bustling Lagos metropolis.

In a statement released on Sunday, Commissioner for Transportation Oluwaseun Osiyemi outlined the traffic management plan. He emphasized that motorists traveling from Apapa to Oshodi will experience through traffic, and this will apply in reverse as well. “Motorists heading to Badagry from Apapa will continue their journey on the Apapa-Oshodi Expressway, taking a turn into Akinwande Road to link Coker and access the Lagos-Badagry Expressway,” Osiyemi explained.

The commissioner detailed alternative routes for drivers heading to and from different locations. “Motorists heading to Lagos from Badagry will also have through traffic and vice versa,” he noted. Additionally, he stated that those driving towards Apapa will be redirected into Durban Road, allowing them to link to Amuwo Odofin Estate and then connect back to the Apapa-Oshodi Expressway.

Osiyemi reassured the public that the diversion routes will be clearly marked with signs to facilitate navigation. “The diversion routes have been well marked with signs to assist them in navigating their destinations,” he added, stressing the importance of clear communication during the construction phase.

To further support this initiative, officers from the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) will be deployed along the affected routes. Their presence aims to oversee traffic flow and ensure that the diversions run as smoothly as possible. “We will have officers stationed to manage traffic and minimize disruptions during this period,” Osiyemi stated.

Motorists have been urged to cooperate with the traffic management measures implemented during the construction. “I encourage all motorists to be patient and to cooperate with the interventions put in place to minimize inconveniences,” Osiyemi advised, highlighting the collective effort needed to manage the anticipated disruptions.
