Minister of Women’s Affairs Intervenes in Detention of 32 Children

The Minister of Women’s Affairs, Imaan Sulaiman-Ibrahim, has voiced significant concern over the detention of 32 children reportedly arrested during the #EndBadGovernance protests in Kano and Kaduna states on August 3, 2024. The minister’s statement on Saturday highlighted the urgency of addressing the treatment and rights of these detained minors.

Sulaiman-Ibrahim acknowledged the public’s outcry regarding the welfare and safety of the children, stating, “The Ministry is taking active steps to address these issues.” She emphasized that the rights of every child are paramount, rooted in the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, the Child Rights Act, and international treaties that Nigeria is bound to uphold.

In a demonstration of her commitment, the minister made a late-night visit to the detention facility where the children are held. During her visit, she interacted with the children, providing comfort and listening to their concerns. “I assured them of my commitment to their well-being,” she remarked, underlining the importance of personal engagement in advocacy.

Sulaiman-Ibrahim also engaged with relevant authorities to ensure that the detained children are receiving appropriate care and that their rights are being protected. She confirmed, “Communications are underway with relevant authorities, including the Ministry of Justice, the judiciary, and correctional institutions, to ensure that these children’s cases are expedited and heard in juvenile courts as mandated by law.”

Active monitoring of the children’s welfare is ongoing, with the Ministry collaborating with child rights advocates to safeguard against any potential harm or maltreatment. Plans are being developed to work closely with child protection services to provide post-release support, including psychological counseling and social assistance.

“The Ministry is committed to facilitating the reintegration of these children into their communities,” the minister explained, adding that partnerships with various stakeholders will be critical in exploring educational opportunities to enhance the children’s future.

Furthermore, Sulaiman-Ibrahim revealed that the President has directed the Attorney General of the Federation to expedite the review of these minors’ cases. She expressed confidence that justice would be served, aligning with Nigeria’s dedication to the rule of law and the principles of child protection.

Key initiatives are being proposed, including revisions to laws addressing juvenile delinquency and fostering multi-sectoral engagement to empower communities and authorities in prevention efforts. “We are focused on preventing juvenile delinquency across Nigeria,” Sulaiman-Ibrahim added.

Assuring concerned citizens, the minister reaffirmed the Ministry’s commitment to advocating for the rights of the detained children. “Protecting the rights of all children remains a priority, and every effort will be made to guarantee their safety, welfare, and justice,” she concluded.
