The National Association of University Students (NAUS) has announced its opposition to the proposed nationwide protest scheduled for October 1, citing concerns over the potential impact on students and society. At a press conference in Abuja on Sunday, NAUS National President Josiah Peter urged the Federal Government to distribute 3,000 CNG buses to all institutions to help cushion the effects of subsidy removal on university students.
“We recognize the profound difficulties caused by the recent hike in fuel prices and understand the strain it places on our students and society,” Peter said, emphasizing the need for alternative solutions.
Instead of protesting, NAUS plans to engage in dialogue with relevant authorities to protect its interests. “We urge all university students to shun all forms of protest… except as a last resort if our demands are not met,” Peter stated.
The association also called on the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation Limited (NNPC) to ensure uniform pricing of PMS across all filling stations and to encourage companies like Dangote to build more refineries.
President Bola Tinubu’s efforts toward educational reforms and NELFUND innovation were acknowledged by Peter, who expressed appreciation for the initiatives.
The fuel subsidy removal has sparked controversy in Nigeria, with many citizens concerned about the impact on their daily lives . The decision is part of the government’s efforts to reform the economy and allocate resources more efficiently.
