NERC Responds to National Grid Failures

The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) has announced ongoing discussions to transfer the management of the national grid to an Independent System Operator. This move aligns with the provisions of the Electricity Act 2023, which aims to “engender more discipline in grid management,” according to a NERC spokesperson. This transition is seen as a critical step towards improving the overall efficiency and reliability of Nigeria’s power infrastructure.

In a concerning development, NERC has confirmed that an explosion at the Jebba transmission station was responsible for the latest collapse of the national grid, which occurred early Saturday morning. “Initial reports indicate that today’s outage was triggered by an explosion of a current transformer,” NERC noted, highlighting the severe impact of infrastructure failures on power supply.

This recent outage marks the third collapse of the national grid within a single week, leading to widespread power outages across the country. The grid first tripped on Monday, followed by another failure during restoration efforts on Tuesday. Such repeated incidents raise alarm about the stability of Nigeria’s electricity supply.

NERC’s statement on its official X handle reflects growing concern over the “recent escalating incidence of grid disturbances,” which have resulted in significant outages across various states. “These disturbances are reversing many of the gains recently achieved in reducing infrastructure deficit and improving grid stability,” the commission emphasized.

Efforts to restore power have made notable progress, with NERC reporting that as of 1 PM on Saturday, electricity supply had been restored in 33 states and the Federal Capital Territory. “Power significantly restored, as at 13:00 hours, in 33 states and the FCT,” the commission stated, illustrating their commitment to resolving the crisis.

In response to the ongoing challenges, NERC has announced plans for an investigative public hearing to examine both the immediate and remote causes of the recurring grid disturbances. “In pursuit of finding a permanent resolution to the challenges of the national grid, we shall shortly conduct an investigative public hearing,” they confirmed, signaling a proactive approach to identifying solutions.

The planned public hearing will allow stakeholders to engage in the discussion surrounding grid management and reliability. “The date and venue of the public hearing will shortly be announced in the national dailies, and stakeholders are encouraged to participate,” NERC added, emphasizing the importance of collaboration in addressing these pressing issues.

As the commission continues to navigate the complexities of the national grid’s management, the move towards unbundling the System Operator function from the Transmission Company of Nigeria Plc is crucial. This unbundling is expected to lead to “more discipline in grid management and optimised investment in infrastructure,” thereby paving the way for a more stable electricity supply in Nigeria.
