Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala

Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, the Director-General of the World Trade Organisation (WTO), has announced her intention to seek a second four-year term as head of the organization.

In an interview with Reuters on Monday, Okonjo-Iweala expressed her desire to complete “unfinished business” from her first mandate. “I would like to be part of this chapter of the WTO story, and I stand ready to compete for the position,” she stated.

Okonjo-Iweala plans to send a formal letter to the WTO’s main decision-making body, outlining her intentions. “For my second term, I intend to focus on delivering,” she emphasized, highlighting her commitment to addressing outstanding issues.

As the first female and African head of the 30-year-old trade body, Okonjo-Iweala took office in March 2021. Her current term is set to expire on August 31, 2025.

Okonjo-Iweala’s re-election bid aims to build on her accomplishments and tackle pressing global trade challenges.
