Nigeria and India have signed a series of landmark agreements aimed at strengthening cooperation in several critical areas, including defense, economic development, food security, healthcare, and energy. The agreements were finalized during a high-level state visit by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to Nigeria at the invitation of President Bola Tinubu.
The official visit, which took place on Sunday, included a formal welcome ceremony at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, followed by in-depth bilateral talks between the two leaders. A joint statement issued after the discussions outlined the primary areas of collaboration between the two countries, signaling a deepening strategic partnership. The Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Mr. Bayo Onanuga, confirmed the agreements in a statement titled *“Nigeria, India Reinforce Strategic Partnership, Vow to Boost Economic, Defence, Health, and Food Security.”*
A key focus of the bilateral talks was security, particularly counterterrorism efforts and maritime security. Both leaders expressed a shared commitment to strengthening cooperation in these areas, with a particular emphasis on intelligence sharing and coordinated actions to combat terrorism and piracy. “We have agreed to enhance collaboration in counterterrorism, maritime security, and intelligence sharing,” the joint statement read. The leaders also discussed the rising threats in the Gulf of Guinea and the Indian Ocean, regions that are crucial for global maritime trade.
Both nations pledged to take coordinated actions to safeguard critical maritime trade routes, recognizing the significant role these waterways play in global commerce. As part of this commitment, they agreed to continue joint naval exercises and anti-piracy operations in the Gulf of Guinea, a region that has long struggled with piracy and other maritime security challenges. “We will continue regular naval exercises and joint anti-piracy operations in the Gulf of Guinea to safeguard these critical maritime routes,” the statement noted.
In addition to security, the two leaders focused on enhancing economic ties between Nigeria and India. With India being one of Nigeria’s largest trading partners, the discussions covered various ways to boost trade and investment between the two nations. Both sides agreed to explore further opportunities for collaboration in sectors such as energy, food security, and healthcare, with a particular emphasis on strengthening infrastructure in these areas.
A significant outcome of the visit was the agreement to collaborate on food security initiatives. The two countries committed to sharing best practices and expertise in agricultural production, particularly in the areas of food processing and storage. This move is seen as a step toward ensuring food self-sufficiency and enhancing agricultural productivity in both countries. “We will work together to promote food security, focusing on sustainable agricultural practices and innovation,” the joint statement emphasized.
On healthcare, Nigeria and India agreed to deepen their collaboration by enhancing access to medical services and establishing healthcare infrastructure in Nigeria. The two nations also pledged to expand their cooperation in providing affordable healthcare, particularly in rural areas, by leveraging India’s experience in public health management. “We look forward to greater cooperation in healthcare delivery, with a focus on establishing hospitals and expanding diagnostic services,” the statement read.
The energy sector also figured prominently in the discussions. Nigeria, as a major energy producer, and India, as a rapidly growing energy consumer, have shared interests in fostering greater collaboration in this field. The two nations agreed to work together on renewable energy projects and enhance energy access in Nigeria, with a focus on sustainable solutions that could serve as models for other developing countries.
Both leaders concluded their talks by affirming their commitment to continue strengthening bilateral ties and promoting mutual growth. As India and Nigeria move forward with these new agreements, the leaders expressed confidence that their partnership would contribute to long-term peace, security, and prosperity in both nations.
