“‘Nigeria Has Everything It Needs to Thrive,’ Obasanjo Tells Leaders at Methodist Anniversary”

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has called on Nigerian leaders to make more effective use of the country’s abundant resources to foster national development. Speaking at the 40th anniversary celebration of the Methodist Archdiocese of Abuja on Sunday, Obasanjo emphasized that Nigeria possesses all the necessary resources to thrive, but that the nation’s potential remains untapped due to mismanagement and neglect. He urged leaders to work towards a prosperous future, guided by gratitude for the nation’s natural wealth.

Obasanjo echoed sentiments shared earlier by Methodist Prelate Dr. Oliver Aba, highlighting the need for Nigerians to appreciate the blessings God has bestowed on the country. “Just as Egypt has the River Nile, Nigeria has the Rivers Niger and Benue, plus crude oil, fertile soil, and other natural resources,” he remarked. Obasanjo stressed that these resources are a testament to Nigeria’s divine endowment, noting, “I firmly believe God didn’t create Nigeria to struggle. He has given us everything we need; it’s our duty to appreciate Him, especially since many countries lack what Nigeria has.”

The former president also called for prayers and national healing, acknowledging that Nigeria’s current struggles are not God’s fault but rather a result of human mismanagement. “We’ve squandered God’s gifts, but if we humble ourselves and seek Him, He will heal our land,” Obasanjo said. His comments underscored the need for unity and a collective effort to address the country’s challenges.

President Bola Tinubu, represented by Mr. Nyesom Wike, also offered words of encouragement during the event. In his goodwill message, Tinubu praised the Methodist Church Nigeria for its pivotal role in advancing social justice, education, and humanitarian work across the country. “The Methodist Church has significantly contributed to our nation’s development through social justice, education, and humanitarian efforts, transforming lives nationwide,” he said. He further commended the church for promoting peace and unity, urging continued dedication to addressing the nation’s challenges.

The service also honored prominent figures with the Knights of John Wesley award, including Obasanjo, former Presidents Yakubu Gowon and Goodluck Jonathan, President Tinubu and his wife Oluremi Tinubu, as well as other political and religious leaders. Methodist Prelate Dr. Oliver Aba, in his message titled “Our Appreciation and Gratitude to God,” encouraged Nigerians to remain hopeful amid the country’s challenges, quoting the biblical story of the ten lepers to emphasize the importance of gratitude and faith.
