Martins Vincent Otse, better known as VeryDarkMan (VDM), has sparked significant controversy after appearing in a full police uniform, igniting a backlash from the Nigerian Police Force. Declaring himself a champion against injustice in Nigeria, VDM’s provocative statement has resulted in outrage among law enforcement officials, despite his intentions.
On Saturday, the Nigerian Police Force issued a stern statement via X, condemning VDM’s actions as “a direct affront to our institution.” They stressed that his unauthorized use of the uniform “dangerously undermines the respect and sanctity” of police symbols, signaling the seriousness of the matter.
Law enforcement officials emphasized that VDM’s stunt should not be dismissed as mere entertainment. In light of the incident, they announced a formal investigation to trace the origins of the police gear used in VDM’s video. The police are determined to determine whether Otse had any legitimate grounds for his actions, stating that “this investigation aims to uncover how VDM acquired the uniform and whether any internal breaches occurred.”
The incident has prompted a wider discussion about the boundaries of social media activism and the respect for official symbols. While VDM aimed to spotlight issues of injustice, his methods have placed him at odds with the authorities, raising critical questions about how to advocate for change legally and responsibly.
As the investigation unfolds, the tension between creative expression and the necessity of respecting official institutions becomes more pronounced. “This incident could serve as a precedent for how similar actions are viewed and handled in the future,” officials warned, particularly in an era where social media significantly influences public discourse.
In a post on their official X account, the Nigeria Police Force stated, “NIGERIA POLICE CONDEMNS UNLAWFUL USE OF POLICE UNIFORMS BY CONTENT CREATORS.” The statement underscored their disapproval of VDM’s portrayal, emphasizing that they “strongly condemn the unauthorized use of official uniforms and accoutrements” by the content creator.
Moreover, the police explicitly disassociated themselves from VDM’s actions, noting, “The Force unequivocally disassociates itself from this unauthorized portrayal.” This clear stance demonstrates the police’s commitment to maintaining the integrity of their institution.
Additionally, the police outlined the legal implications of such actions, referencing Section 251 of the Criminal Code Law and Section 133 of the Penal Code Law. They cautioned that unauthorized use of police uniforms is a criminal offense, highlighting that violators could face strict penalties.
While the Nigeria Police Force appreciates the creativity of young Nigerians, they firmly cautioned against the misuse of police symbols. “Unauthorized use of these items undermines the values and integrity of the Force and will not be tolerated,” they asserted, reiterating the importance of maintaining respect for law enforcement.
