Nigerian Doctor and Artist Sets World Record for Largest Drawing

Fola David-Tolaram, a Nigerian doctor and artist, has achieved a remarkable milestone by setting the Guinness World Record for the largest drawing created by an individual. The announcement, made on Thursday, recognized David-Tolaram’s groundbreaking artwork, which spans an impressive 1,004.7 m² (10,814.5 ft²), roughly equivalent to the size of 3.8 tennis courts.

The record-breaking drawing, completed at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena in Lagos, is a tribute to Nigeria’s rich cultural diversity. David-Tolaram, 31, described his creation as a map of Nigeria, designed to showcase the country’s various cultural elements. “Nigeria is a multi-cultural nation. I wanted to create something that speaks to that and give people an avenue to celebrate their cultures,” he said.

Titled *The Unity of Diversity*, the piece reflects Nigeria’s distinct traditions, incorporating representations of the nation’s food, clothing, festivals, and music. David-Tolaram explained that the concept of the drawing was born out of his desire to highlight the beauty of the country’s varied cultures. “It was this experience that I brought to the stadium to create this drawing,” he shared, revealing that he traveled across Nigeria to immerse himself in its diverse cultures before beginning the artwork.

The monumental project took six days to complete on a massive 1,360 m² canvas. David-Tolaram used waterproof markers to bring his vision to life, with the setup alone taking two days to assemble the large canvases. Initially, he had planned to work from the center outward in a circular pattern, but he adjusted his approach as the work progressed, moving between sections as needed to ensure the artwork’s continuity.

Despite the ambitious nature of the project, David-Tolaram admitted to experiencing significant apprehension before he began the drawing. “I remember standing right in the center of this canvas, about to start this drawing, and feeling a lot of apprehension and fear. For five minutes I stood there making sure I conditioned myself for the beginning of such a challenge,” he recalled.

However, once he began, his nerves quickly dissipated. “The moment my marker touched the canvas, there was no going back. All the fear had gone away,” he said, reflecting on the turning point that propelled him through the challenge. As he worked, David-Tolaram was supported by large crowds of spectators who gathered at the 5,000-seat stadium, creating an “electrifying” atmosphere that further fueled his determination.

David-Tolaram’s achievement has not only earned him a place in the Guinness World Records but has also filled him with pride and a sense of accomplishment. “Holding a Guinness World Records title is absolutely unbelievable. I grew up reading about world records and never thought that I would be a record title holder,” he said. Though still processing the significance of his achievement, David-Tolaram expressed his honor in receiving such recognition. “I feel very honoured, distinguished, and Officially Amazing,” he added.

The monumental drawing, The Unity of Diversity, now stands as a testament to both David-Tolaram’s artistic talent and his dedication to celebrating Nigeria’s cultural heritage.
