Nnamdi Kanu Accuses Enemies of Igbo of Exploiting His Detention to Attack Southeast Villages

Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), has condemned the recent attacks on villages in the Southeast, claiming that his continued detention has allowed the enemies of the Igbo people to target defenseless communities. Kanu made these statements after a routine meeting with his legal team, which is led by his Lead Counsel, Aloy Ejimakor.

In a statement issued on social media platform X, Kanu reacted to the alarming situation in Amegu Nkalaha Community, where residents had accused the Nigerian military and police of complicity in the herdsmen attack. According to the residents, they were warned by unknown sources not to leave their village on Saturday, only for the attackers to strike the following day. The lack of intervention from security forces further raised suspicions of foul play, as locals noted that the soldiers who arrived after the attack took their phones and prevented them from documenting the destruction.

The attack in Amegu Nkalaha resulted in the brutal murder of 16 residents, with 25 homes being completely razed. The residents were left devastated, with no visible response from the authorities. This incident has fueled further concerns over the safety and security of Igbo communities, with many questioning the role of the security forces in such attacks.

Kanu, in his statement, expressed his frustration over the situation, lamenting the vulnerability of Igbo communities in his absence. “Enemies of the Igbo race have taken advantage of my illegal detention to unleash coordinated attacks on defenseless villagers,” Kanu’s statement read. He further emphasized that had he been free, no group or entity would have dared to carry out such an attack in the region.

The IPOB leader’s sentiments reflect his long-standing position that the Igbo people have been systematically oppressed and targeted by both local and national forces. He reiterated that his incarceration has allowed these forces to operate with impunity, particularly in the Southeastern region, where his movement garners significant support.

During the meeting, Kanu’s legal team, headed by Aloy Ejimakor, issued a public statement, detailing the concerns raised by the residents of Amegu Nkalaha. Ejimakor noted that Kanu’s remarks were a direct response to the grievances of the local people, who had been left to face the violence alone. “Had Kanu been a free man, this attack would not have occurred,” the statement read.

The involvement of the military and police in the attacks has raised questions about the role of security agencies in maintaining peace in the region. Eyewitnesses reported that soldiers arrived at the scene of the attack only after the destruction had already occurred, adding to the suspicions of a cover-up. The seizure of mobile phones from the residents, preventing them from documenting the damage, has only deepened the concerns about a coordinated effort to silence the victims and prevent the truth from emerging.

Kanu’s statement, quoting an Igbo proverb—“Gbuo dike, gbuo dike, ihe ike ruo achowa dike”—which translates to “kill a warrior, kill a warrior, a man of strength is needed to achieve strength,” is a poignant reminder of the struggle for the survival and prosperity of the Igbo people. It serves as a call to arms for those who continue to fight for justice and freedom in the face of oppression.
