NYSC Members Express Frustration Over Delayed Allowance Payment

In a surprising turn of events, the Federal Government has paid National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members their old monthly allowance of ₦33,000 for September, despite a recently approved increase to ₦77,000. This unexpected payment has left many corps members feeling frustrated and disappointed.

The government had officially announced the increase in the NYSC monthly allowance from ₦33,000 to ₦77,000, effective from July 2024, in line with the National Minimum Wage (Amendment) Act 2024. NYSC Director General Brigadier General YD Ahmed had previously expressed his appreciation for the raise, stating it would provide much-needed financial relief and serve as motivation for corps members.

However, the delay in implementing the new allowance for September has caused significant concern among corps members. Many had been anticipating the higher payment, leading to disappointment when they received the old rate instead. “They haven’t paid yet, but those around me who received theirs got ₦33,000 instead of the promised ₦77,000,” one corps member remarked, illustrating the frustration felt by many.
