Okupe Predicts Tinubu’s Re-election in 2027, Addresses ‘T-Pain’ Nickname

Former presidential spokesman Doyin Okupe has expressed confidence that Nigerians will re-elect President Bola Tinubu in 2027, citing his belief in the president’s ability to overcome the country’s current challenges. Okupe, who was previously an active supporter of Labour Party candidate Peter Obi during the 2023 elections, made the remarks in an appearance on Channels Television’s Politics Today program on Monday.

Okupe addressed the popular nickname “T-Pain,” which has circulated on social media to describe President Tinubu. While many critics have used the term to voice frustration over the country’s economic issues, Okupe offered a different interpretation. “The T-Pain nickname actually means Temporary Pain,” he explained, emphasizing that the current hardships facing Nigerians are temporary and will eventually lead to positive outcomes for the nation.

The former presidential spokesperson also discussed the political dynamics in the country, particularly regarding the concept of rotational presidency between Nigeria’s northern and southern regions. According to Okupe, there is an unwritten agreement between the two regions that ensures power rotates to different areas of the country. He referred to the presidency of former President Muhammadu Buhari, who completed two terms in office, and said that despite criticisms of his administration, Buhari’s tenure marked the conclusion of the northern region’s turn.

“Buhari may not have performed to the expectations of many, but he completed his eight years,” Okupe noted. “Now that Tinubu is in office and is performing well, it is only fair that he gets his own eight years to serve the nation.” He further stressed that Nigerians are reasonable people who understand the complexities of governance and are not demanding too much from their leaders.

Okupe’s optimism about Tinubu’s future success is rooted in the president’s potential to address key national issues, particularly the ongoing fuel and food crises. “If Bola Tinubu can resolve the fuel crisis and the food crisis before the 2027 elections, you will see Nigerians on the streets chanting, ‘It’s Bola or nobody,’” Okupe said confidently. He believes that by tackling these challenges, Tinubu will solidify his legacy and gain widespread support for a second term.

The country is currently grappling with significant inflation, with the cost of living skyrocketing and many Nigerians struggling to make ends meet. Despite these challenges, Okupe remained hopeful, arguing that the temporary pain Nigerians are experiencing will give way to long-term gains. “This temporary pain will eventually lead to extensive, pleasant, and lasting benefits for the nation,” he said, attempting to frame the current struggles as part of a larger vision for national progress.

Okupe’s remarks came just a day after he met with President Tinubu in Abuja, suggesting that their conversation may have reinforced his positive outlook for the president’s future. While he did not provide specifics about the meeting, it is clear that Okupe continues to be a strong ally of the current administration, despite his previous involvement in opposition politics.
