Omoyele Sowore, the presidential candidate of the African Action Congress in the 2023 election, has been arrested at Murtala Muhammad International Airport in Ikeja, Lagos State.
Sowore’s flight arrived from Washington Dulles International Airport on Sunday morning, and he was detained by the Nigerian Immigration Service, who confiscated his international passport.
In a post on his official X handle, Sowore revealed his detention, stating, “I had just arrived in Nigeria from the USA at MMIA in Lagos; upon reaching Nigerian Immigration, my passport was seized, and they told me they had orders to detain me.” He attributed his arrest to the “fascist @officialAbat regime’s” fear of dissent and the upcoming #FearlessINOctober revolt.
Sowore’s arrest comes after a leaked DSS memo on Thursday, September 12, 2024, ordered his arrest upon arrival in Nigeria. He has been a vocal critic of the government and has called for direct actions against tyranny.
In his post, Sowore urged citizens to engage in the planned series of direct actions slated for October 1 and beyond, saying, “In case this becomes another prolonged and protracted detention, I urge our citizens to ensure they ALL stop tyranny by all means acceptable and necessary…”
