“Our Policies Are Deliberate and Well Thought-Out”: President Tinubu Assures Nigerians of Reforms for Prosperity

President Bola Tinubu has assured Nigerians that his administration’s ongoing reforms are a crucial step toward building long-term national wealth and prosperity. Speaking at the 2024 Nigerian Media Merit Awards held at the Muson Centre in Lagos, Tinubu emphasized that the policies his government is implementing are carefully planned to address the nation’s economic challenges, including diversification, human capital development, infrastructure, and wealth creation.

Represented by Mohammed Idris, the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Tinubu told the audience, “I will say with every sense of conviction that our policies are deliberate and well thought-out.” The president reiterated his belief in the strategic nature of his government’s approach, reinforcing that the reforms are aimed at addressing the country’s fundamental issues in a comprehensive manner.

“We are headed towards the restoration of Nigeria, on a path requiring a comprehensive approach that addresses economic diversification, human capital development, infrastructure development, wealth creation, and inclusive growth,” Tinubu added, providing further insight into the central goals of his administration’s reforms. These reforms are intended to foster a more sustainable and inclusive economy, benefiting all Nigerians.

A key area of focus for the president is tax reform, which he identified as a critical component of his broader economic strategy. Tinubu called for an overhaul of the current tax administration system, which he described as inefficient. “The current tax administration system requires a complete overhaul,” he stated, underlining the importance of revamping the country’s tax processes to promote fairness and transparency.

While Tinubu acknowledged that opinions may differ regarding the specifics of the proposed tax reforms, he emphasized the consensus among Nigerians on the need for change. “There is a national consensus on the need for reform,” the president asserted, signaling that the proposed changes have wide support across various sectors of society.

He also provided details on the tax bills currently before the National Assembly, explaining that they aim to streamline the country’s tax system and reduce the burden on vulnerable Nigerians. “The tax bills before the national assembly aim to streamline the number of taxes, ease the burden on vulnerable Nigerians, increase the share of taxes going to the states, and foster business growth through targeted incentives,” Tinubu noted.
