Peter Obi Calls for Unity, Forgiveness on Gen. Yakubu Gowon’s 90th Birthday

In a poignant message marking the 90th birthday of former military leader General Yakubu Gowon, Peter Obi, the 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party, has emphasized the importance of forgiveness and unity among Nigerians. This celebration comes at a time when the nation reflects on its turbulent past, particularly the civil war that left deep scars.

Gowon, who celebrated his milestone birthday on October 19, 2024, received accolades from prominent figures across the country, including President Bola Tinubu and former President Muhammadu Buhari. The outpouring of well-wishes highlights Gowon’s enduring legacy as a unifying figure in Nigerian history.

Obi took to social media to express his respect for Gowon, stating, “I am privileged to join other Nigerians of goodwill to celebrate a highly respected leader… At a time of division, you stood for unity.” He praised Gowon’s leadership during a critical period in the nation’s history, calling it a “life of service” characterized by sacrifice.

However, Obi’s congratulations were met with mixed reactions. Some individuals felt that his gesture was inappropriate, given the painful memories associated with Gowon’s leadership during the civil war. In response to the backlash, Obi clarified his intentions, stating that his message was not just ceremonial but a step towards promoting forgiveness.

“I needed to show… that the ultimate heroism is forgiving the enemy and moving forward,” Obi elaborated. He underscored that forgiveness is essential for healing, especially considering Nigeria’s tumultuous history, particularly the civil war that claimed millions of lives.

Reflecting on the civil war, Obi noted the significance of Gowon’s survival into his 90s, viewing it as part of a divine plan for reconciliation. He also referenced Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, who played a key role in the war’s conclusion, highlighting a continued commitment to national unity.

Obi cited the burial of Biafra leader Dim Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu as a symbol of Nigeria’s evolving spirit of reconciliation. He suggested that such gestures indicate a willingness to move beyond past grievances and promote healing.

In his tweets, Obi emphasized biblical teachings on forgiveness, quoting passages that encourage compassion and understanding. He stated, “Forgiveness is more a process than an instinct,” arguing that harboring anger only perpetuates division and conflict.

“Whatever reason I will give for joining the rest of Nigerians to greet General Gowon… it may never truly conform with some persons,” Obi acknowledged, recognizing the complex emotions surrounding the legacy of the civil war.

Concluding his message, Obi urged those upset by his comments to embrace a vision of a Nigeria free from hate and resentment. He called for a collective commitment to good governance, justice, and peace as essential components for the nation’s progress. “What Nigeria needs badly and urgently to survive going forward is good governance, which can only germinate and grow in true peace,” he stated, reinforcing his message of hope and unity.
