Former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has strongly criticized the state of Nigeria’s democracy, citing leadership failure as a major obstacle.
In a post on his official X handle, Obi highlighted the numerous challenges facing Nigeria’s democracy, including rampant corruption, insecurity, and lack of freedom of speech.
He emphasized that these problems have not only persisted but are worsening, eroding the democratic ideals of the nation.
Obi urged political leaders to pause and examine the country’s democratic journey, striving to build a true democracy where every Nigerian has a voice and a fair hearing.
“Democracy in Nigeria has continued to suffer untold setbacks, heavily burdened by leadership failure,” Obi stated, lamenting the country’s classification as a captured state.
He noted that citizens suffer untold hardship, deprivation, and insecurity while political leaders exploit state resources.
Obi stressed that Nigeria’s poor performance in every measurement of true democracy signals a critical deficiency in the democratic system.
He made these comments on International Democracy Day, emphasizing the need to uphold democratic tenets.
Obi’s statement serves as a call to action for political leaders to address the challenges facing Nigeria’s democracy and work towards building a more inclusive and equitable society.
The former Anambra State Governor’s comments have sparked a renewed focus on Nigeria’s democratic challenges and the need for reform.
