Peter Obi Donates ₦10 Million to Hospital in Recognition of Transparency

Former Anambra State Governor and Labour Party presidential candidate in the 2023 election, Peter Obi, has donated ₦10 million to Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital in Ihiala, Anambra State, in recognition of the hospital’s transparency and integrity. This latest donation is part of an earlier pledge he made to support healthcare institutions across the state.

During a visit to the hospital over the weekend, Obi explained that he had accidentally overpaid the institution by ₦2.5 million when he redeemed his initial pledge of ₦20 million earlier this year. Upon realizing the error, the hospital’s management promptly informed him of the overpayment. In response, Obi decided to make an additional donation of ₦10 million to acknowledge their honesty.

“Today, in furtherance of my unwavering commitment to critical and measurable areas of development—health, education, and lifting people out of poverty—I visited Our Lady of Lourdes College of Nursing Sciences, Ihiala,” Obi said during his visit. “I am pleased to see the positive outcomes of our ongoing support.” He emphasized that his donation reflects not just financial assistance, but also his appreciation for the integrity the hospital had demonstrated.

Earlier in the year, Obi had pledged ₦20 million to 16 medical institutions, including Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital, as part of his commitment to improving healthcare in Anambra State. This latest donation highlights his continued dedication to the sector, particularly in ensuring that institutions act with transparency.

Rev. Fr. Onuorah Ugochukwu, the CEO of Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital, recounted the overpayment situation, stating, “When I contacted him about the error, he was pleased with the integrity shown, and today he is here again with an additional donation.” Fr. Ugochukwu expressed gratitude for Obi’s continued support and for the hospital’s role in healthcare delivery in the region.

Obi also announced that other institutions that reported similar overpayments would receive an additional ₦10 million each, further underscoring his commitment to fostering transparency and accountability. “The additional donation is a recognition of the integrity demonstrated by these institutions,” Obi noted.

The former governor used the occasion to reiterate the importance of transparency and integrity across all sectors, emphasizing that these values are essential for national progress. “It is important that we continue to build a society based on honesty and trust,” Obi said, highlighting the role of such values in driving development in the country.
