President Tinubu Appoints Jamiu Abiola as Senior Special Assistant on Linguistics, Foreign Matters

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has appointed Jamiu Abiola, son of the late Chief Moshood Kolawole Abiola, as the Senior Special Assistant on Linguistics and Foreign Matters. This significant appointment was announced in a statement released by Segun Imohiosen, the Director of Information and Public Relations in the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, on Wednesday, November 27, 2024.

Jamiu Abiola, a prominent figure in Nigerian political circles, is the son of MKO Abiola, who was widely recognized as the legitimate winner of the 1993 presidential election that was annulled by then-military leader General Ibrahim Babangida. MKO Abiola’s legacy and his enduring impact on Nigeria’s democratic journey have made his family significant in the country’s history.

The appointment of Jamiu Abiola takes effect from November 14, 2024, and is in line with the provisions of the Certain Political and Judicial Office Holders (Salaries and Allowances, etc) Act 2008, as amended. This piece of legislation governs the appointment of political officeholders in Nigeria, ensuring that appointments are made according to established legal frameworks.

Before his appointment, Jamiu Abiola served as the Special Assistant to the President on Special Duties in the Office of the Vice President. His experience in this role, as well as his background in political affairs, is expected to aid him in his new responsibilities, which will involve collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

In his new capacity, President Tinubu has tasked Jamiu to leverage his experience and expertise in linguistics and foreign matters to enhance Nigeria’s diplomatic relations and foreign policy initiatives. The President emphasized that Jamiu’s appointment is crucial in strengthening Nigeria’s foreign affairs, particularly in the areas of language and international relations.

The appointment is seen as a strategic move by President Tinubu to bring in fresh perspectives from individuals with a strong background in governance and diplomacy. Jamiu’s father, MKO Abiola, was a notable figure in Nigeria’s pro-democracy movement, and Jamiu’s appointment is being viewed by many as a continuation of his family’s involvement in national leadership.

President Tinubu’s decision to appoint Jamiu Abiola is also being seen as a recognition of the Abiola family’s role in the struggle for democracy, particularly in the aftermath of the annulled 1993 election. This gesture highlights the importance of family legacies in Nigerian politics, especially for figures like MKO Abiola, who made significant sacrifices for the country’s democratic process.
