President Bola Tinubu has reaffirmed his administration’s dedication to eliminating security threats and addressing violent crimes in Nigeria, while also commending the Armed Forces for successfully hosting the 2nd African Military Games in Abuja. The President, who was represented by Vice President Kashim Shettima, delivered his commendations during the closing ceremony of the event at the Moshood Agboola Stadium in Abuja on Saturday night.
During the ceremony, Tinubu praised the military for its exemplary performance in organizing the event, which he described as not only a display of athletic prowess but also a demonstration of unity and collaboration among African nations. He stated, “The games we have witnessed are a powerful reminder of what we can achieve when we unite, not just as soldiers, but as guardians of a shared destiny.” Tinubu emphasized that the games provided an opportunity for military personnel to exchange ideas and collaborate on solutions to common challenges facing the continent.
Tinubu noted the significance of events like the African Military Games in promoting physical, mental, and emotional well-being. He stressed that these competitions go beyond athletic achievements, fostering a sense of unity and cooperation among participating nations. “This platform offers opportunities to exchange ideas and explore innovative solutions to our challenges,” Tinubu added, highlighting the role of such events in strengthening ties within Africa.
As Chairman of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), Tinubu also underscored the need for stabilizing solutions across the continent. “We must continue to pursue stabilizing solutions to the challenges facing our region, and this is a duty we owe to the people of West Africa and beyond,” he said, reaffirming his commitment to peace and stability in the region.
In his speech, the President called for deeper ties between nations and a stronger sense of camaraderie among military personnel to achieve greater success. He praised the collaboration displayed during the games, particularly as it came 22 years after the inaugural African Military Games. “The spirit of collaboration exemplified by this edition of the African Military Games is significant,” Tinubu said, recognizing the importance of such events in enhancing unity across the continent.
Tinubu also took a moment to commend the leadership of the Nigerian Armed Forces, specifically acknowledging the roles of the Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa, and the President of the Organization of Military Sports in Africa (OSMA), Major General Abdullahi Maikano. “I commend the Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa, and the OSMA President, Major General Abdullahi Maikano, for their leadership and dedication in making this event a success,” Tinubu said, noting their commitment to ensuring the success of the games.
The President also congratulated the delegates from the participating countries for their sportsmanship and professionalism throughout the competition. “You have shown not only your military expertise but also your extraordinary abilities as sportsmen and women,” he remarked, acknowledging the dedication and skill of the competitors.
The closing ceremony was marked by a celebration of unity and collaboration, with Tinubu’s message of peace and security resonating throughout. His remarks highlighted the importance of such events in not only showcasing military strength but also in fostering closer ties between African nations. The success of the 2nd African Military Games, Tinubu stated, is a testament to the power of collaboration and shared goals in advancing the continent’s collective well-being.
