Former Big Brother Naija contestant, Queen Mercy Atang, has opened up about a troubling experience with online trolls, which was triggered by unfounded divorce rumors surrounding her marriage. The reality TV star took to Instagram to share her ordeal, expressing her frustration with the severe online harassment she has faced. Queen revealed that the rumors about her alleged separation led to a surge of disturbing messages, some of which were aimed directly at her husband.
In her post, Queen detailed the offensive messages that were sent to her husband’s direct messages (DMs) by trolls. One of the messages included an insult that referred to her as an “amoeba,” suggesting that her husband should reprimand her for her behavior. She was visibly disturbed by the nature of these attacks and the lack of respect shown towards her and her marriage.
As the rumors about her marriage spread, Queen described how women began messaging her husband, disparaging her in their messages. Some even went as far as offering to marry him, claiming they would be more compliant than she was. The influx of unsolicited messages left her feeling violated and unsettled, as many of these individuals sought to undermine her relationship in the most disrespectful manner.
The trolling experience has made Queen reconsider her approach to sharing personal aspects of her life on social media. She expressed that, at times, she has been tempted to keep her marriage out of the public eye entirely to avoid the scrutiny and negativity that comes with it. “I now understand why so many people keep their marriages low-key,” she admitted. “Trust me, this space is not safe.”
Despite the challenges, Queen emphasized her resilience in the face of online harassment. She noted that she had developed a “thick skin” due to the constant trolling she has encountered over time. However, she made it clear that there should be limits to the kinds of things people feel entitled to say online, especially when it concerns someone’s personal life and relationships.
In her post, Queen cautioned her detractors, making it clear that there are boundaries they should not cross. “Please, if you want to drag me, go ahead, but don’t cross the line,” she wrote. “If I decide to make an example of you, you won’t like it.” She warned.
