The immediate-past President of Nigeria, Muhammadu Buhari, has defended his administration’s impact on the country’s economy and security, asserting that significant progress was made during his eight years in office. Speaking on Wednesday at his country home in Daura, Katsina State, Buhari shared his reflections during a courtesy visit by members of the Katsina State Correspondents’ chapel.
Buhari expressed that when he assumed office in 2015, Nigeria faced severe economic and security challenges. He pointed out that his administration was tasked with addressing issues such as terrorism, banditry, and economic hardship. He emphasized that, under his leadership, Nigeria witnessed an improvement in both sectors. “Security and economy improved significantly in Nigeria under my administration compared to what we met in 2015. Things will continue to improve in Nigeria,” Buhari stated in Hausa.
The former president credited his government’s strategic efforts, which he said successfully addressed the crises left by the preceding Peoples Democratic Party (PDP)-led administration. Buhari highlighted the revolving security and economic strategies his administration introduced, stating that they played a key role in reducing the severity of the challenges Nigeria faced during his tenure.
While discussing the complexities of governance, Buhari pointed out that Nigerians in positions of power fully understand the challenges of managing the country’s administrative processes. “Only Nigerians in the corridor of power will understand the administrative challenges confronting the country,” he explained. According to Buhari, implementing policies and programs is often hindered by numerous obstacles that require significant effort and dedication to overcome.
The former president’s remarks were met with some support from local media figures. Yusuf Ibrahim-Jargaba, Chairman of the Katsina State Correspondents’ chapel, acknowledged Buhari’s efforts in combating terrorism and banditry. Ibrahim-Jargaba also praised the former president’s “hard work, dedication, and selfless service,” which he believed played a crucial role in maintaining Nigeria’s unity during challenging times.
