Seyi Law Criticized for Attacking Borno Governor Over Tax Bill Comments

In a recent social media exchange, comedian and Senior Special Assistant on Entertainment & Tourism to the Ondo State Governor, Seyi Law, found himself under fire from X (formerly Twitter) users after criticizing Borno State Governor Babagana Zulum over his stance on the controversial tax reform bill. Zulum had made an appearance on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Sunday, where he shared his views on the four tax bills currently undergoing review by the Nigerian House of Representatives.

During the interview, Governor Zulum expressed concerns about the potential impact of the tax bills, specifically stating that if passed into law, only Lagos State would stand to benefit from the reforms. He emphasized that the tax measures would not effectively address the needs of other states, particularly those in northern Nigeria, including Borno, where Zulum serves as governor.

Zulum’s comments sparked reactions from various quarters, but it was Seyi Law’s response on X that attracted significant attention. The comedian, who is also a prominent political appointee in Ondo State, expressed his disapproval in a tweet, sharply criticizing Zulum’s position. “You want to hold the SW to ransom because of a tax bill?! These people too funny. All their degrees have been thrown in the garbage while trying to defend their elites. Zulum sef dey zuzu,” Seyi wrote, using a popular Nigerian slang term to express disdain.

The tweet quickly gained traction, with many social media users responding to the exchange. Some agreed with Seyi’s sentiments, while others criticized his tone and approach, particularly given his position in Ondo State’s government. His tweet sparked debates about the role of elected officials and appointees in expressing opinions on national issues, particularly when they involve other governors.

Among the critical responses was a pointed reply from a civil engineer, who questioned Seyi Law’s ability to comment on another governor’s policies, given his role as an aide to Ondo State’s governor. The engineer wrote, “If you are sacked now & you go back to cracking dry jantofubu jokes and disturbing Seyi Tinubu’s precious moments on WhatsApp with your empty ideas, you will say your governor is wicked because how are you his mouthpiece & talking about another governor like this?”
