Nigerian singer Raoul John Njeng-Njeng, better known as Skales, recently claimed that he played a key role in inspiring his fellow musician, Burna Boy, during a pivotal moment in his career. In a candid interview with Naija FM in Lagos, Skales shared his perspective on the early stages of Burna Boy’s rise to stardom, asserting that the Port Harcourt-born artist had not achieved significant success before their collaboration in 2017.
According to Skales, Burna Boy was relatively unknown in the music scene before they worked together on the ‘Temper Remix’ in 2017. He emphasized that their collaboration was a turning point for Burna Boy’s career, stating, “As at then, Burna Boy had no hot song before I featured him on ‘Temper Remix.’” This comment points to Skales’ belief that their partnership played a crucial role in Burna Boy’s subsequent success.
Despite his assertion, Skales made it clear that he was not claiming to be the sole reason for Burna Boy’s rise to fame. He acknowledged Burna Boy’s talent and success but stood firm in his belief that their collaboration helped set the stage for the Grammy-winning artist’s breakthrough. “I’m not trying to take credit for his success but he has inspired me over the years and I believe I inspired him at a point, too,” Skales explained.
The artist also emphasized the importance of mutual respect and admiration in the music industry. He stated, “Nobody help anybody. We probably admire ourselves and we decide to work together.” Skales stressed that the primary purpose of collaboration is to uplift each other, rather than to rely on one individual for success.
Although Skales took pride in having contributed to Burna Boy’s early career, he also acknowledged the influence Burna Boy has had on his own journey. The two artists, who have worked together in the past, have mutual respect for one another and have both risen to prominence in the Nigerian music scene, albeit in different ways.
In the interview, Skales reflected on the dynamics of the Nigerian music industry and the importance of collaboration between artists. He suggested that while individual success is important, working together and supporting one another can help elevate the entire industry.
