Nigerian singer Skales has openly expressed his belief that his former record label mate, Wizkid, has never had a positive relationship with him. The ‘Shake Body’ crooner shared his thoughts in a recent appearance on the ‘Listen’ podcast, revealing that he has long felt a sense of negative energy from the Afrobeats star.
In his interview, Skales reflected on the history of their interactions, emphasizing that he has always sensed that Wizkid disliked him. “I have always felt that Wizkid didn’t like me. I don’t know why but there were occasions where he showed his dislike for me,” Skales explained.
The singer recalled a specific incident from several years ago that highlighted the tension between them. He detailed a social media fallout during a “question-and-answer” session on Twitter, where a fan inquired about his relationship with Wizkid. “Somebody said, ‘What’s up with your guy Wiz?’ And jokingly, I said, ‘My brother Wiz does not have my time anymore,'” Skales explained. This seemingly harmless comment led to a heated response from Wizkid.
Skales said that from that moment, Wizkid began to insult him and his family. “Wizkid started insulting me, my father, and my mother. That’s to show you that he probably had me in mind. He said I wear fake jewellery,” Skales claimed. At the time, Skales revealed that it wasn’t he who responded to the insults, but rather his ex-girlfriend, who took to social media to defend him.
The artist also explained his approach to the situation, noting that he prefers to avoid public battles that could fuel negative narratives. “I pick my battles. When I know that people will believe anything you say, I don’t need to fight you. Because whatever I say, they are going to say I am jealous. They are going to say I am envious of Wizkid’s success,” he said. Despite the backlash and the negative publicity, Skales chose not to engage directly with Wizkid.
Reflecting on the ongoing tension, Skales stated that he has made efforts to reconcile with Wizkid over the years but has always been met with resistance. “I sat down recently and said, ‘This guy [Wizkid] really don’t like me.’ I have tried to make peace with him but he was adamant. He didn’t like me, I can tell you for a fact,” Skales concluded.
