Taraba State Budget Review Sparks Controversy Over Spending Priorities

A recent review of Taraba State’s budget has raised concerns over the state’s expenditure priorities, particularly highlighting a staggering N2.6 billion spent on office furniture and fittings between January and September 2024. This revelation has drawn significant public attention, as the state continues to struggle with socio-economic challenges while allocating vast sums to office decor.

According to budget performance documents, the third quarter of 2024 saw a massive N2 billion earmarked for office furniture and fittings. This amount far exceeds spending on vital infrastructure projects, including the construction of schools, water facilities, and hospitals. The allocation has raised questions about the state government’s priorities and its commitment to addressing critical developmental needs.

In contrast, the state’s spending on essential services and infrastructure was significantly lower. Taraba allocated only N681 million for electricity provision and N1.3 billion for water infrastructure. Meanwhile, the construction and improvement of public schools amounted to N1.4 billion. Even more concerning, no funding was provided for the construction of health centers or hospitals during this period, raising alarms about the state’s commitment to improving healthcare.

Further scrutiny reveals that other areas of development also suffered from underfunding. For instance, the rehabilitation of water facilities and agricultural infrastructure received no budget allocation, leaving these crucial sectors without financial support. However, N1.7 billion was allocated for the repair of public schools, and N496.5 million was spent on erosion and flood control efforts.

The lavish spending on office fittings stands in stark contrast to the harsh socio-economic realities faced by the state’s residents. Taraba is home to 1.37 million people living in poverty, and more than 80% of its population lacks access to basic amenities. Alarmingly, about 48% of children in the state do not have access to education, while 83% of households lack proper sanitation facilities. Even more concerning is the fact that 86% of households in the state have no access to clean drinking water.

This spending discrepancy has sparked widespread public outcry, with many calling for greater fiscal discipline and better management of public funds. State governments, including Taraba, often rely heavily on loans to finance their budgets due to insufficient revenue. However, this reliance on borrowed funds has raised concerns about the long-term sustainability of the state’s financial situation.
