TikTok Removes Over 2.1 Million Videos in Nigeria for Community Guidelines Violations

TikTok has announced the removal of more than 2.1 million videos in Nigeria during the second quarter of 2024 due to violations of its community guidelines. This significant action is part of the platform’s ongoing efforts to enhance content moderation and create a safer environment for its users

According to the Community Guidelines Enforcement Report released on Tuesday, the removed videos account for less than 1 percent of the total uploads in Nigeria during the reporting period. The report emphasizes TikTok’s commitment to maintaining a secure platform. “Key findings show that 99.1 percent of these videos were proactively removed before users reported them, with 90.7 percent taken down within 24 hours,” it stated.

These figures highlight TikTok’s proactive approach in addressing harmful content, showcasing its dedication to user safety. The company aims to stay ahead of potential risks by employing advanced technologies for content moderation. “We will continue to invest in technologies aimed at improving content moderation and understanding potential risks,” the report reassured, underscoring its commitment to transparency and safety for its diverse user base in Nigeria and beyond.

On a global scale, TikTok reported the removal of over 178 million videos in June 2024, with 144 million of these removals being facilitated through automated systems. This reflects the platform’s robust efforts to monitor and regulate content effectively. “With a proactive detection rate now at 98.2 percent globally, TikTok is more efficient than ever at addressing harmful content before users encounter it,” the company stated.

The removal statistics indicate that TikTok is taking significant steps to mitigate the spread of harmful content on its platform, particularly in a rapidly growing market like Nigeria. The measures taken are part of a broader strategy to ensure user safety while maintaining a vibrant and engaging community.

Owned by ByteDance, a private global company founded by Chinese entrepreneurs, TikTok continues to navigate the challenges of content moderation in diverse markets. ByteDance’s ownership structure includes 60 percent held by global institutional investors, 20 percent by its founders, and 20 percent by employees.
