Famous Nigerian musician Timaya recently opened up about his admiration for controversial street-pop singer Portable during an interview on Channels Television. He expressed that Portable’s bold and unfiltered persona resonates with him, stating, “Portable reminds me of my past because he’s crazy like me.” This connection highlights a shared spirit between the two artists.
Reflecting on his first encounter with Portable’s music, Timaya recounted a significant moment. “When he came out newly, I told 2Baba about him on our way to Delta State. I said, have you heard that guy Portable? Zazu Zeh. That guy is just like me because I was a crazy guy,” he recalled. This revelation underscores the instant recognition he felt upon hearing Portable’s work.
Timaya also addressed how the younger generation may not be aware of his early career, which was marked by a wild and rebellious attitude. He remarked, “These Gen Z’s don’t know about my early career. So, sometimes when I talk, some people would be like Timaya is unproblematic, he minds his business.” This comment reflects his awareness of how perceptions of artists can change over time.
He elaborated on his transformation, saying, “I just look at them like, if only they knew me. It’s now that I have calmed down. I was really, really crazy then. I was hot like fire but I think there’s growth.” Timaya’s words highlight the journey of personal development that many artists experience as they evolve in their careers.
The musician further explained that his early behavior was a strategic choice. “At the time, it was a strategy for me,” he noted, indicating that his past antics were not merely reckless but part of his approach to gaining attention and success in the industry.
