President Bola Tinubu on Monday visited Maiduguri to sympathize with victims of the devastating flood that has ravaged the city, leaving 37 dead, over a million displaced, and millions of naira in damages.
“I am here to sympathize with you. I heard the report; my Vice President gave details to me personally. I was going directly to America but I had to call off the trip to be with you,” Tinubu told the Shehu of Borno, Alhaji Abubakar Ibn El-Kanemi.
The President pledged government support for rehabilitation and rescue efforts. “It is our problem, not just your problem; we must share in each other’s pains. We will help Borno State,” he assured.
El-Kanemi thanked Tinubu for his concern and urged him to address the root cause of the flooding. “Find the root cause of this flooding to address it appropriately to avoid future occurrences. 80% of the city has been affected by this disaster,” he said.
Governor Babagana Zulum expressed gratitude to the President for his visit. “Your Excellency, this shows your sense of humanity and fraternity with the people of Nigeria. We remain eternally grateful to you.”
Tinubu’s visit demonstrates the government’s commitment to supporting affected communities. The President’s solidarity with Borno State is seen as a crucial step in addressing the humanitarian crisis caused by the flood.
The flood, described as the worst since 1994, has disrupted socio-economic activities in Maiduguri.
