Former House of Representatives Speaker, Yakubu Dogara, has cleared the air on the removal of fuel subsidy, stating that President Bola Tinubu wasn’t the mastermind behind the policy. Although Tinubu announced the end of subsidy, Dogara clarified that the President didn’t put the policy in motion.
Speaking on Channels TV, Dogara explained that before Tinubu’s election, the National Assembly had already approved a budget with no provision for subsidy payment. This, he said, indicates that the policy was already in place before Tinubu took office.
Dogara acknowledged that Nigerians are feeling the effects of subsidy removal but maintained it was a necessary step for the country’s progress. “The problem with this country is that people always want to talk about her problems… But nobody is talking about solutions, even among the elites,” he said.
Dogara emphasized that real change requires sacrifices and urged Nigerians to focus on finding solutions rather than dwelling on problems. His comments come at a time when the country is grappling with the implications of subsidy removal.
President Tinubu has previously stated that the decision to remove petroleum subsidy was challenging but necessary for long-term energy security and economic growth. The removal of subsidy has been a topic of debate, with some arguing it was the right move and others criticizing the timing and implementation.
