The Chief of Army Staff (COAS) of Nigeria, Lt. General Taoreed Abiodun Lagbaja, has passed away at the age of 56. The news was confirmed on Wednesday by the Special Adviser to the President, Bayo Onanuga, who issued a statement on behalf of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
According to the statement, President Tinubu expressed deep sorrow over the passing of the top military officer. “President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, regrets to announce the passing of Lt. General Taoreed Abiodun Lagbaja, Chief of the Army Staff, at age 56,” it read.
Lagbaja’s death follows a period of illness that had kept him out of the public eye in recent weeks. Though the nature of his ailment was not disclosed, sources indicated he had been undergoing treatment abroad. The Nigerian Army had previously dispelled rumors of his death in late October, clarifying that he was receiving medical care overseas.
Lagbaja was appointed as the Chief of Army Staff on June 19, 2023, by President Tinubu, who recognized him for his experience and leadership. His tenure, however, was short-lived, as he succumbed to his illness only a few months into the role.
In the wake of his deteriorating health, the military leadership took steps to ensure continuity. On October 30, President Tinubu appointed Major General Olufemi Oluyede as acting Chief of Army Staff. This move came as speculation about Lagbaja’s health persisted, with some sources hinting at a potential leadership transition.
On November 5, President Tinubu officially promoted Oluyede to the rank of Lieutenant General, a move that confirmed his new role as the head of Nigeria’s Army. This formal decoration further cemented Oluyede’s leadership following the tragic passing of his predecessor.
